![]() If you need some Lie groups and algebras the book by Kirilov "An Introduction to Lie Groops and Lie Algebras" is nice for applications to geometry the best is Helgason's "Differential Geometry - Lie Groups and Symmetric Spaces".įOR TONS OF SOLVED PROBLEMS ON DIFFERENTIAL GEOMETRY the best book by far is the recent volume by Gadea/Muñoz - "Analysis and Algebra on Differentiable Manifolds: a workbook for students and teachers". A nice introduction for Symplectic Geometry is Cannas da Silva "Lectures on Symplectic Geometry" or Berndt's "An Introduction to Symplectic Geometry". For Riemannian Geometry I would recommend Jost's "Riemannian Geometry and Geometric Analysis" and Petersen's "Riemannian Geometry". In particular, Nicolaescu's is my favorite. ![]() Both are deep, readable, thorough and cover a lot of topics with a very modern style and notation. Lee "Manifolds and Differential Geometry" and Liviu Nicolaescu's "Geometry of Manifolds". Other nice classic texts are Kreyszig "Differential Geometry" and Struik's "Lectures on Classical Differential Geometry".įor modern differential geometry I cannot stress enough to study carefully the books of Jeffrey M. To really understand the classic and intuitive motivations for modern differential geometry you should master curves and surfaces from books like Toponogov's "Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces" and make the transition with Kühnel's "Differential Geometry - Curves, Surfaces, Manifolds". Graduate level standard references are Hatcher's "Algebraic Topology" and Bredon's "Topology and Geometry", tom Dieck's "Algebraic Topology" along with Bott/Tu "Differential Forms in Algebraic Topology." To start Algebraic Topology these two are of great help: Croom's "Basic Concepts of Algebraic Topology" and Sato/Hudson "Algebraic Topology an intuitive approach". Although it is always nice to have a working knowledge of general point set topology which you can quickly learn from Jänich's "Topology" and more rigorously with Runde's "A Taste of Topology". If you want to learn Differential Topology study these in this order: Milnor's "Topology from a Differentiable Viewpoint", Jänich/Bröcker's "Introduction to Differential Topology" and Madsen's "From Calculus to Cohomology". If you want to have an overall knowledge Physics-flavored the best books are Nakahara's "Geometry, Topology and Physics" and above all: Frankel's "The Geometry of Physics" (great book, but sometimes his notation can bug you a lot compared to standards). ![]() In particular the books I recommend below for differential topology and differential geometry I hope to fill in commentaries for each title as I have the time in the future. Suggestions about important theorems and concepts to learn, and book references, will be most helpful.ĪDDITION: I have compiled what I think is a definitive collection of listmanias at Amazon for a best selection of books an references, mostly in increasing order of difficulty, in almost any branch of geometry and topology. What are the most important and basic theorems here? Are there concise books which can teach me the stuff faster than the voluminous Spivak books?Īlso finally I want to read into some algebraic geometry and Hodge/Kähler stuff. What is a connection? Which notion should I use? I want to know about parallel transport and holonomy. For a start, for differential topology, I think I must read Stokes' theorem and de Rham theorem with complete proofs.ĭifferential geometry is a bit more difficult. Towards this purpose I want to know what are the most important basic theorems in differential geometry and differential topology. I must teach myself all the stuff by reading books. Unfortunately I cannot attend a course right now. I have decided to fix this lacuna once for all. I have a hazy notion of some stuff in differential geometry and a better, but still not quite rigorous understanding of basics of differential topology.

It remains to be seen how successful VCs are in sustaining the dynamism observed in 2021, and whether this dynamism will persist and help kick start a credible alternative to bank finance in the EU.ĭemertzis, M. While it is too early to assess the fallout from this exceptional VC environment, such risks further highlight the importance of monitoring the development of capital markets in Europe.Īs the numbers in Figure 3 show, capital markets in the EU have had a very active two years but remain small in comparison to the US. Sceptics argue that this ‘competition to give away money’ (or “ capital foie gras”, as some more graphically put it) will mainly advantage men, while others believe that it will result in misallocation of funds towards businesses with no chance of survival. ![]() Reports suggest that as a result, VC funds decide on deals with less information on start-ups and viability of investment. With venture capitalists competing more intensely to seal deals in record time, entrepreneurs find themselves with increased bargaining power. Early results indicate that private investors are monitoring where the fund is investing.īut this new dynamism also comes with risks. Alongside equity funds, this instrument is also meant to provide advisers. More recently, the European Innovation Council launched an ‘Accelerator’ aimed at early-stage emerging technology. Alongside specific country initiatives, the European Investment Fund (and sub-initiatives like the European Angels Fund) have provided investment funds and technical assistance. As Europe lacks the large pools of capital available in the US through university endowments and non-profit foundations, EU government financing has been an important supplement to pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and family office capital (instrument that deals with family wealth). It is not expected that one major hub will emerge in Europe to rival, say, Silicon Valley, but a more dispersed ecosystem across different parts of Europe should be expected.īut in the EU, another factor has played a decisive role: government support in the form of financing programmes that have eased access to equity funding for start-ups. A combination of VC investors, start-ups, universities and research centres is attracting both investors and talent, creating innovation ecosystems. In a recent conference on the future of venture capital in Europe, a number of major investment areas were identified across northern Europe in gaming, clean technology, B2B software, digital health and big data. Clearly, more potentially interesting firms are looking for financing.Īs the numbers indicate, the European VC scene is becoming larger, more active and more successful. Analysts expect companies that are capable of riding the wave of innovation to increase in scale, valuation and importance. Indeed, the ability to work remotely has allowed start-up teams to be dispersed and therefore be more international. The pandemic has caused disruption to working methods. It is not just the demand for investment that has increased. And with exits still increasing, there is enough interest and ability to fund new firms. Coupled with low interest rates, investors are still seeking opportunities, funnelling funds into private companies and VC funds. The large numbers of exits in the past year has led to a large supply of capital. A report from Ernst & Young describes how the number of new initial public offerings (IPOs) worldwide in 2021 increased 64% in one year, with Europe being one of the regions breaking records. ![]() VCs exploited the favourable stock market conditions in 2021 to exit from their investments through public offerings. Interestingly, those in-helmet alerts work even if the rider isn’t actively navigating. The Forcite app provides navigation and gives warnings of debris, crashes and even police, which are communicated to the rider via voice prompts and that strip of LEDs. Developers are reworking the app to use Mapbox (said to offer “a smoother, more polished experience” according to a Forcite rep). Most of the MK1S’s functionality is driven by the Forcite app, which for now draws its data from Here Technologies. “So, we actually went around to a lot of manufacturers asking them if they wanted to build one, and all of them were, like, ‘No, we’re very happy with the margins that we make on motorcycle helmets,'” he said. That compares to about $600 to $800 for a top-shelf helmet made by leading manufacturers like Shoei and Arai - manufacturers that Boyadgis and co tried to partner with. Should a helmet be damaged in a crash or otherwise, the electronics can be ported over to a replacement. This design not only ensures the maximum possible safety and performance in various international helmet certifications, but it also allows an element of reuse. While the electronics are within the shell of the helmet, including a rechargeable, ceramic battery, they do not compromise the crucial foam that actually protects the rider’s head. For now, that’s the only way to give the helmet commands while on the bike. A separate, wireless controller mounts to the handlebars of the bike and allows the rider to toggle the camera, phone and navigation with a thumb press. It can also be manually toggled for highlights, which are stored on a microSD card. That 1080p camera is built into the chin and can be used to automatically record incidents. A quick blink of red means the camera is activated. An inward sweep of orange means an accident ahead. ![]() A green sweep from left to right means to make a right turn, for example. These glow upward, providing simple visual cues to the rider, all driven by the smartphone app. What’s novel in the MK1S is a row of RGB LEDs inside the helmet above the chin bar. Many manufacturers now sell helmets with integrated Bluetooth functionality. This means that riders can take calls, listen to music or get navigation instructions provided to the helmet wirelessly from the phone. Nuts and boltsĪt its simplest, the MK1S is a helmet with an integrated Bluetooth audio connection, including speakers positioned over the ears. The Forcite team ultimately nixed early ideas of including an augmented reality display of the sort found in the Skully AR-1. A moment’s distraction can be fatal, and so the helmet’s UI had to be minimal. Motorcycling requires far more concentration than driving a car. And then this new layout, which was, like, how do they receive information in an effective way?” So, you know, how they use the dash cameras, the things they don’t like about how they use com-sets, how they use audio. “We got those riders together and started talking about the technology which they use. “We put together a group of 8,000 riders, an online test pilot club - it was on a Facebook page,” Boyadgis said. Keep everything within the shell of the helmet, and that force is reduced.įorcite’s in-house team started iterating on design ideas but soon turned to the wisdom of the crowd. In a crash, more rotational velocity on a helmet can mean greater forces transferred to the brain within. “These things increase the rotational velocity of the helmet.” “Everyone started to use these action cameras on the front of their helmet, com-sets on the side of their helmet,” Boyadgis said. ![]() There are over 42 taps available for patrons to choose from at Aftershock Brewing Co.
